Shahid Afridi appealed to Asif Ali Zardari to take control of national cricket

Former captain Shahid Afridi has appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Patron-in-chief, to take control of national cricket to prevent it from delving into further crisis.

Afridi had been leading the Twenty20 and ODI sides since early 2010 before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently removed him as one-day captain for the series against Ireland, appointing Test captain Misbahul Haq, 37, as his successor.

He had developed differences with Pakistan coach Waqar Younis on selection matters during the team's 3-2 win against the West Indies earlier this month, and his public criticism of the coach ultimately led to him losing the captaincy.

Afridi told Geo News that he has already played under the supervision of his seniors, and can continue doing that in future as well, but compromising on self-respect is not possible.

He, therefore, appealed to Zardari to urgently intervene in the matters related to the game to save the sport from getting into deeper crises.

On Monday, Afridi had announced retirement from international cricket, blaming the PCB for his sudden decision. However, he hinted now that he might reconsider his decision.

He said that the entire nation prays for him whenever he is in the field, adding that he can return to the team if everyone remains concerned with one's own work.

Afridi said that national heroes deserve respect, and that it is imperative to subside biasness in order to bring about a positive change.
