Aung San Suu Kyi to present the BBC's Reith Lectures

 

Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, will deliver the 2011 BBC Reith Lectures.

Her two lectures will discuss the themes of dissent and liberty and will be broadcast on BBC Radio from 28 June.
The lectures are part of a wider series, entitled 'Securing Freedom', reflecting on global events of the past year.
Former MI5 Director-General Baroness Manningham-Buller will present three further lectures in September.
Aung San Suu Kyi said: "When I was under house arrest, it was the BBC that spoke to me - I listened.

"I am so grateful for this opportunity to exercise my right to human contact by sharing with you my thoughts on what freedom means to me, and others across the world who are still in the sad state of what I would call 'unfreedom'."

Aung San Suu Kyi's first lecture will examine the notion of dissent, and will draw on her personal experience as a campaigner for democracy.
In 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won the Burmese election by a landslide. She then spent 15 of the next 20 years under house arrest, and was finally released on November 13, 2010.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner's second lecture will explore the notion of democracy, and the responsibility of the international community towards authoritarian regimes, with reference to recent events in the Middle East.
Normally the Reith Lectures are delivered in person in front of a live audience, but due to the exceptional circumstances, Aung San Suu Kyi's lectures were recorded in Burma this week.




The second phase of this year's Reith Lectures will be broadcast in September 2011 to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington DC.

Americans rated most hilarious in global poll

 The Germans have been voted the world's `least funny nationality' in a global poll, which names Americans the funniest overall and the Spanish the most amusing Europeans, ahead of the Italians and French.

The social network and dating website Badoo.com asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name both the "funniest," or best at making people laugh," and "the least funny" nationality.

Americans took the funniest prize, followed by the Spanish in second and Italians in third.

The voting for "least funny" nationality confirmed the view of American novelist Mark Twain that "a German joke is no laughing matter."

The Germans won comfortably, ahead of the Russians and Turks.

Yet, the British -- whose "The Office" and Monty Python shows have become pillars of English-language humor -- learn from the Badoo poll that they are not as funny as they think. They placed just seventh out of 15 -- behind the Brazilians, French and Mexicans.

But they ranked higher when Badoo asked the opposite question: Which nationality do you find the least funny? Here, the British ranked fourth, just after the Turks.

"I'm afraid that we don't find some of the results very funny," said Badoo's Director of Marketing Lloyd Price, who is British.

The Americans topped the poll, as the folks who brought us TV sitcoms like Friends, The Simpsons, Frasier, Seinfeld and any number of comic greats from the Marx Brothers to Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Larry David, Ben Stiller or now Tina Fey.

Obama Backs Ban Ki-Moon's Bid For Second Term As UN Chief

The U.S. President Barack Obama has extended support to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in his bid for a second term of office, the White House said in a statement on Tuesday.

"President Obama welcomes United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's announcement that he will run for a second term, and the United States supports his candidacy," it said.

According to the White House, under Ban's stewardship the U.N. performed key role of mediator as well as an arbiter in several vexatious issues all over the globe. A former South Korean Foreign Minister, Ban also broke new ground through steps to recruit more women to the U.N.'s higher echelons. Equally significant was his proposal to slash the U.N. budget by curtailing wasteful expenditure.

The 66-year-old had already won the backing of Britain, China and France. Now with the U.S. too supporting his candidature, his re-election could well become a foregone conclusion.

India had also announced its support to Ban's candidature. Incidentally during the 2007 election, Ban's main rival was the then U.N. diplomat and current Member of India's Parliament Shashi Tharoor.

Ban's current term runs through until December 31.

Sri Lanka Vs England : England Gain Control Again

After getting comprehensively beaten by England, Sri Lanka came into the match as underdogs. The match is held in Lord’s which is quite a favorite ground for the English team. The start went quite well for Sri Lankans as they won the toss and elected to field.
England was put into bat and they seemed to be quite confident while coming out and it was a perfect day to smack the ball around all parts of the park. The sun was beating down which was nullifying the any movement that was available for the fast bowlers. But surprisingly England had a bad start as they lost Andrew Strauss in the third over. It was beautiful bowling from Welegedara who got him stuck in front of the wickets.
Just after losing Strauss England lost two more wickets in the form of Trott and Pieterson. At that moment England was 22 for 3 and it seemed that their first innings will come to an end earlier than expected. But Ian Bell and Alistair Cook had other plans as they started rebuilding the innings. Both of them put up a beautiful partnership of over a 100 runs and took the team out of the danger zone. After playing a useful knock of 52 runs Ian Bell lost his wicket and England was once again in trouble at 130 for 4.
But the batsmen who came behind him seemed that they have had some training of surviving and scoring at the same time. The next wicket fell at the score of 201 when Alastair Cook got out for 96 runs. It was quite unlucky of him to miss his hundred which he deserved very well. After Alastair got out Matt Prior came to the middle and started playing freely. He was looking to score runs from the word o and Sri Lanka seemed to lose colour after that. On the other hand, Eoin Morgan scored 70 odd runs and supported his partner pretty well to take his team to a respectable total.
Towards the last session Eoin Morgan got out after scoring 79 and the score was 302 by that time. Matt Prior was looking to score some quick runs and Stuart Broad joined the party as well. Both of them remained not out till the end and took the score to 342 for 6. It will be interesting to see how England bat tomorrow morning as they might look to score as many runs in the first session and make Sri Lanka bat from the second session onwards.
