Rahul Gandhi vows to protect farmers' rights

India's Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi delivers a speech at a rally held for farmers in Aligarh, east of New Delhi. Gandhi, tipped as a future Indian premier, vowed to protect farmers' rights against greedy land developers as he ended a march through the nation's dusty countryside
  • India's Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi delivers a speech at a rally

Rahul Gandhi, tipped as a future Indian premier, vowed at the weekend to protect farmers' rights against greedy land developers as he ended a march through the nation's dusty countryside.
Gandhi, who has pitched himself as champion of the India's poor, told a rally yesterday that the ruling Congress party to which he belongs, was committed to ensuring farmers receive fair compensation for their land.
"Farmers say if a rich person's land is taken, he is given the market rate, but when it comes to a poor farmer, he is fired upon and beaten," Gandhi, 41, told the gathering of thousands of farmers in Aligarh in northern India.
The rally capped a four-day trek by Gandhi, scion of the famed Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, and his supporters through a western region of the pivotal opposition-ruled state of Uttar Pradesh which is India's most populous.
Crucial assembly elections are set to be held next year in the state that will serve as a dress rehearsal for national elections due in 2014.
Stepping up his fight against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, Gandhi accused her government of acquiring farmers' lands for golf courses.
Analysts say how well the Congress party performs in the state polls will be viewed as a major test of Gandhi's potential national electoral appeal and for his prospects of being prime minister.
Gandhi is son of national Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi.
Embattled Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a Gandhi loyalist picked by Sonia to lead the government which has been reeling from a string of graft scandals, is seen by analysts as keeping the premier's seat warm for Rahul.
Rahul Gandhi, who is managing the party's campaign in Uttar Pradesh, promised the rally that a land acquisition bill expected to be presented by Congress in the next parliamentary session would protect farmers' rights.
The legislation is intended to guarantee farmers market rates for their land.
Gandhi's promise to protect farmers came after India's Supreme Court earlier in the week struck down the acquisition of 156 hectares (390 acres) of land as illegal in Uttar Pradesh in a satellite city of the Indian capital.
"The authority has to act in the public interest," the Supreme Court said. "You don't understand the psyche of a farmer. Land is his mother."
Bitter and often violent disputes over land acquisition regularly hold up industrial projects. Smoothing the process is seen as one of the biggest challenges for India as it seeks to achieve rapid economic development.

India secure series win

A superb unbeaten 86 from Rohit Sharma led India to a three wicket victory over West Indies Saturday to secure the five-match one day series for the tourists who now have an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Sharma led India's recovery from 92 for six as they chased down 226 at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium.

An 88-run partnership with Harbhajan Singh (41) put India back in contention and then Praveen Kumar (25 not out) saw the tourists through to a comfortable victory with 22 balls to spare.

It was a day for lower order contributions with West Indies only managing to set a decent target thanks to an outstanding 92 not out from 84 balls by Jamaican Andre Russell.

Russell's score is the highest made by a number nine batsman in one-day internationals and included a 78-run partnership with wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh as the Caribbean side recovered from 85-6.

The big hitting innings included eight fours and five sixes as the success-starved home crowd were finally treated to some entertainment.

Once again West Indies struggled against spin with leg-spinner Amit Mishra taking 3-28 from his ten allotted overs.

Opener Lendl Simmons again was the pick of the West Indies batsmen with 45 before Mishra had him caught by Virat Kohli at slip but the middle order again failed.

India's innings had a similar structure with opener Parthiv Patel hitting 46 but no-one else making a major contribution until Sharma's big knock turned the game.

"That was a game that got away from us," said West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

"Russell and Baugh got us back into it and the guys were confident but we lacked the killer instinct after taking early wickets.

"We have not been getting runs at the top and we lacked the finishing touch," he said.

With the series in the bag, India skipper Suresh Raina said he would rotate the squad in the final two games before the test series begins.

Priyanka Vs Rahul on World Environment Day

Priyanka Chopra More Pics

Bollywood actors Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose are to compete on the World Environment Day June 5 to motivate people to do their bit to save the mother earth.
The Bollywood stars are facing off in a new video for the ultimate Environment Day Challenge - where they are calling individuals, groups, families and schools, even entire communities.
"And for Priyanka and Rahul, this is where the battle lines get drawn. When registering a green activity on the site, people will have the opportunity to pledge their activity to either one celebrity or the other," said a statement issued by UN here.

Priyanka has pledged to plant a tree for every green activity registered in her name while Rahul has pledged to plant two.
"Whether it's switching from plastic bags to cloth bags, car-pooling with colleagues or organising a tree-planting day, green activities can be big, small, local, international, noisy, quiet ... just as long as they're green," it said.
India for the first time is the global host of United Nations Environment Day this year.
UNEP ( United Nations Environment Programme) has given the theme "Forests: Nature at Your Service" in alignment with the UN International Year of Forests, 2011. The theme celebrates the multitude of services - providing clean air, housing rich biodiversity, supplying water - performed by the world's forests.
In the run-up to June 5, the environment ministry has also planned a group of activities, including "Green Walkathon", in partnership with the Delhi government at India Gate.
The other significant feature will be organisation of "Green Haat", involving about 52 partners to showcase initiatives, of forest dwellers, minor forest produce federations of various states, women self-help groups, NGO partners, highlighting the value added forest products at Dilli Haat between June 1-5.
Biodiversity film festival for disadvantaged children, general public, prisoners, and Air Force officials will be organised in partnership with Centre for Media Studies (CMS) in the capital from June 1-4 at National Science Centre, PVR's Cinemas, Tihar Jail and Subroto Park to raise awareness about environmental issues through films from eminent national and international filmmakers.

Gayle and Vettori sink Mumbai Indians

First, the explosive Chris Gayle delivered the big hits. Then, the crafty Daniel Vettori operated with control and guile to provide Royal Challengers Bangalore an emphatic 43-run win over Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier of the Indian Premier League IV at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday night.
Sachin Tendulkar's decision to field boomeranged. There was greater spin for the bowlers in the second half of the contest.
Pursuing a daunting 186, Mumbai Indians finished at a tame 142 for eight. The chasing side was outplayed.
RCB will meet holder Chennai Super Kings in the summit clash on Saturday. The face-off has immense possibilities.
Predatory
Vettori's men were predatory on the field against the side from Mumbai. RCB combined as a mean pack, created the pressure and seized the opportunities.
And the side struck early when aggressive left-hander Aiden Blizzard was held at long-on off efficient left-arm paceman S. Aravind. Pinch-hitter Harbhajan Singh too was prised out by Aravind soon after.
Sachin Tendulkar, though, was stroking with grace and timing. The gaps were found with precision.
In a game and format where one can expect the unexpected, unsung left-arm spinner Syed Mohammad got a quicker delivery to turn sharply past Tendulkar and ‘keeper Abraham de Villiers whipped off the bails. The maestro had been stumped.
Mumbai Indians lost ground rapidly with RCB skipper Vettori operating in a manner that was classical. The accomplished left-arm spinner deceived and consumed Rohit Sharma with his flight and loop. In the same over, Vettori got one to fatally drift into Ambatti Rayudu.
And when the big-hitting Kieron Pollard was spectacularly held by Abhimanyu Mithun at long-off — the fielder did extremely well to retain balance so close to the ropes — off Vettori, the game was going to end only one way.
RCB closed out the match in clinical fashion.
High-octane
Earlier, Man-of-the-Match Gayle was high on octane and low on sympathy for the bowlers. The left-hander is making all the right moves these days.
The ease with which he wades into the bowling is stunning. He picks the length early, creates room with subtle footwork and simply strikes through the line.
Gayle imparts so much power that even in the event of the ball not being timed to his liking, it still soars over the fence for the maximum.
Importantly, Gayle's batting is bereft of exaggerated movements. The feature of his rousing 47-ball 89 (9x4, 5x6) was the manner in which he essayed booming inside-out strokes on the off-side.
His easy, natural back-swing too is a thing of beauty and Gayle's sixes over the sight-screen took one's breath away. While he sought to get on to the front-foot, the manner in which he shifted his weight to the back-leg for those destructive pull shots reflected his flexibility.
Lasith Malinga fired in a yorker and Gayle swatted him to the fence. In the face-off between two game-changers, the West Indian found the right answers.
Mayank Agarwal (41 off 31 balls) played his role well in an imposing 113-run opening partnership in 10.4 overs.
Gayle and Agarwal also combined cleverly as a pair. It was Agarwal who took strike during much of Harbhajan's first two overs with the new ball —the Mumbai Indians wanted the off-spinner to operate more to the left-handed Gayle.
Agarwal whipped out a few vibrant strokes himself; none more than a straight six off Harbhajan after he danced down the track to convert the length.
Ordinary
The Mumbai Indians' catching was ordinary and Agarwal was put down twice; the first miss by Malinga at deep square-leg when the batsman was on 19 proved costly. Harbhajan was the bowler to suffer.
Gayle eventually fell to Munaf Patel —he was picked up at long on. But by then, the West Indian had inflicted considerable damage.
The side from Mumbai fought back. The young Abu Nechim — the paceman went for 27 runs in the opening over of the match — took out Virat Kohli on the pull.
But then, the nimble-footed Abraham de Villiers conjured a cameo in the end overs and Mumbai Indians had a mountain to climb.
And the side slipped.
