Jayasuriya to retire this month

Sri Lanka's opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya will retire from all forms of international cricket after the first one-day match of their England tour later this month, he said on Thursday.

The 41-year-old all-rounder, who quit test cricket in 2007, made the announcement after Sri Lanka Cricket recalled him for the T20 and one-day squads to face England.

"I called you here to inform (you of) my retirement from all forms of (international) cricket after 20 years of play," Jayasuriya told .

"I'll retire after playing a one-day and a T20 game," he said. Sri Lanka face England in a Twenty20 match on June 25 before the first one-dayer at the Oval three days later.

"I will continue to play league matches and domestic cricket," he told Reuters when asked if he would quit all form of cricket.

Jayasuriya, who helped Sri Lanka to their only World Cup triumph in 1996, remains the island nation's highest run scorer in one-day internationals with 13,428 runs from 444 matches.

He is the second highest scorer and the ninth highest wicket-taker in the limited-over game. He has scored 6,973 runs in 110 test matches, and captured 98 wickets.

He was left out of Sri Lanka's World Cup team early this year due to poor performance.

Jayasuriya was elected as a member of parliament last year for Sri Lanka's ruling party.

"I will serve people in my electorate in future and also I will work for the betterment of cricket," he said.

Gayle hopeful of speedy national return

Chris Gayle, who was named the 2010 West Indies Players Association (WIPA) Cricketer of the Year as well as Test Player of the Year during the eighth annual First Citizens WIPA Awards in St Ann’s on Thursday night, is hopeful about getting back into the national side “as quickly as possible”.Gayle, who had been omitted from the West Indies limited-overs squad for the Twenty20 and first two ODI games against India, following his ongoing dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) over his controversial radio interview in April, wrote in his column in the Hindustan Times that he wanted the “issue to be sorted out”.”We have a meeting scheduled sometime in the next few days,” Gayle wrote, “[and] I want to be involved in the game. But it is out of my control. The WICB people are the ones in charge. I have to see if we can resolve the issue. As I had stated to the board, they have known that I am fully available.”Gayle, who watched the Twenty20 game between West Indies and India in Trinidad on Saturday from the stands, wrote it was “disappointing to actually be on the sidelines” and “strange not to be involved in the game, not to be walking out to open the batting”.”The atmosphere was great but the stands are not a great place to be. I want to be in the middle.” Gayle had called on his fans to give him “a wake up call to go and watch cricket, wake me at 9-30am T&T plz [sic]” on Twitter the day before the match. After the game he tweeted that he had a “blast at cricket It was really nice to see the support and appreciation by fans thank you all for d [sic] support!!” During the game he had tweeted “WI Fans Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little things gonna [sic] be alright”, suggesting that that there could soon be a reconciliation between him and the board. The WICB was angered by Gayle’s decision to play in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore but Gayle had said the way he had been treated by the West Indies board (WICB) had left him with little choice but to join Bangalore and miss the home series against Pakistan. Gayle, who ended the IPL as the tournament’s top run scorer, called his stint “memorable.”"The people and fans there showed a lot of warmth,” he wrote. “That was in contrast to how one’s own people fail to recall, tend to forget the things you have done for the team.”From a player’s point of view, that kind of respect is definitely deserved. In your own region you are made to feel like an outsider. It is sad but that is how it is. Yes, here I’m definitely talking about the administration. It is always important that you should feel absolutely relaxed to feel an integral part of an environment.

Shahid Afridi appealed to Asif Ali Zardari to take control of national cricket

Former captain Shahid Afridi has appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Patron-in-chief, to take control of national cricket to prevent it from delving into further crisis.

Afridi had been leading the Twenty20 and ODI sides since early 2010 before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently removed him as one-day captain for the series against Ireland, appointing Test captain Misbahul Haq, 37, as his successor.

He had developed differences with Pakistan coach Waqar Younis on selection matters during the team's 3-2 win against the West Indies earlier this month, and his public criticism of the coach ultimately led to him losing the captaincy.

Afridi told Geo News that he has already played under the supervision of his seniors, and can continue doing that in future as well, but compromising on self-respect is not possible.

He, therefore, appealed to Zardari to urgently intervene in the matters related to the game to save the sport from getting into deeper crises.

On Monday, Afridi had announced retirement from international cricket, blaming the PCB for his sudden decision. However, he hinted now that he might reconsider his decision.

He said that the entire nation prays for him whenever he is in the field, adding that he can return to the team if everyone remains concerned with one's own work.

Afridi said that national heroes deserve respect, and that it is imperative to subside biasness in order to bring about a positive change.
