Jordan king's motorcade 'attacked' in southern city

 

 

 

Jordanian youths yesterday attacked King Abdullah II's motorcade with stones as he visited the southern city of Tafileh, a security official said, but the government immediately denied the incident.

"Part of the king's motorcade was attacked with stones and empty bottles by a group of men in their 20s and 30s after the king's car entered Tafileh," the official said.

"Nobody was hurt and the motorcade changed its route."
He added, without elaborating, that police "tackled the infiltrators and made arrests."


A palace source confirmed that members of the Royal Guard who accompanied the king were not hurt.
But government spokesman Taher Adwan denied the incident had taken place, telling AFP that "the motorcade of his majesty the king was not attacked."


The state-run Petra news agency quoted Adwan as saying that the "visit to Tafileh was successful."
"All that happened was a quarrel between police and people who wanted to greet the king," who ordered several multi-million-dollar development projects in the city, Adwan said.


People in Tafileh, 179 kilometres (111 miles) south of Amman, have been protesting for several weeks to demand reforms and effective measures to fight corruption.


They intercepted the motorcade of Prime Minister Maaruf Bakhit in May and tried to prevent him from visiting the city.


In his first televised address since pro-reform protests started in January in Jordan, the king on Sunday vowed to enhance political and socio-economic reform and promised a new electoral law that would lead to parliamentary government.

Hamilton ready to wave white flag on title hopes

One career Lewis Hamilton will not start from pole at the Canadian Grand Prix, promoting the dejected McLaren driver to all but wave the white flag before Sunday's race.
Twice a winner on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hamilton arrived in Montreal hoping to put the brakes on Sebastian Vettel's blitz towards another driver's crown but after qualifying a disappointing fifth on Saturday, the Briton gave himself little chance of catching the Red Bull world champion.

"Vettel is gone, he is on his way," Hamilton told reporters. "They (Red Bull) are very, very hard for us to catch at this rate."

Hamilton, who became the sport's first black world champion in 2008, had an explosive outburst after the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago hinting at discrimination by stewards after receiving penalties and he struggled to contain his frustration again on Saturday.

Unable to disguise his bitter disappointment, a prickly Hamilton said he had done everything he could to get his McLaren further up the grid but that the car was just too slow.

Ronaldo plays last game for Brazil

SAO PAULO — Former world footballer of the year Ronaldo ended his international career here on Tuesday with a 15-minute appearance as a substitute in Brazil's 1-0 win over Romania in a friendly match.
Watched by a 30,000 crowd, the 34-year-old striker came on for the last 15 minutes of the match with the home side already ahead through a goal from Fred after 21 minutes and he had several goal chances in that time.
"I had three goal opportunities but did not manage to score which would have been a nice present to give back to those who gave me so much," he said afterwards to fans in a chilly Pacaembu stadium.
Fred's match-winning goal was set up by the latest Brazilian golden boy Neymar, who has been linked to a move into the English Premier League.
Ronaldo announced his retirement in February citing recurring injury and health problems.
During a glittering 14-year spell in Europe, Ronaldo scored goals at a prolific rate for PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan, before returning to Brazil in 2009.
He won the World Cup with Brazil as a youngster in 1994 and then in 2002 and became the leading scorer in World Cup finals tournaments when he scored his 15th goal at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
He was twice named European Footballer of the Year, in 1997 and 2002, FIFA world footballer of the year in 1996, 1997 and 2002 and finished his international career with 62 goals in 97 appearances.
